Guide to Dalyan and İztuzu Turtle Beach

At the heart of Dalyan are the reed-lined river channels that link Lake Köyceğiz to the Mediterranean. Gliding through these labyrinthine waterways is the town’s most classic experience: at a gentle pace, you slip between the reeds and straight into the landscape.

The most dramatic moment of the river tour is the Kaunos rock tombs on the opposite cliff face. These 4th-century BC Lycian king tombs are carved directly into the rock in the shape of temple façades, and at sunset they glow a deep gold. One of Dalyan’s most enjoyable rituals is the sulphur-rich natural mud baths on the shore of Lake Köyceğiz. Sinking into the warm, mineral-rich mud, waiting a few minutes for it to dry, then rinsing off is a playful and relaxing experience all at once.

Right beside them, the Sultaniye thermal springs have been known as a source of healing for centuries. With their high mineral content, these warm waters are said to be good for the skin and offer an ideal break to loosen tired muscles after a long day of touring.

The mud and spring experience is often included as part of the river tours, so it slots easily into the same day as Kaunos and İztuzu.

Just north of Dalyan, Köyceğiz is a quiet lakeside town. With its square shaded by broad plane trees, a morning market and tea gardens looking out over the water, it feels like Dalyan’s more laid-back sibling.

The local cuisine is a reason to visit in its own right: the star here is blue crab, which thrives in the waters where lake meets sea. It’s well worth trying as a local speciality at the waterfront restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood.
