IST or SAW: Which Istanbul Airport Should You Fly Into? Transfer Times and Costs by District (2026)

Istanbul Airport (IST) lies in Arnavutköy on the European side, north-west of the city. Most long-haul routes and most Turkish Airlines flights use it. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) sits in Pendik on the Asian side, south-east of the centre, and is home to many low-cost flights, Pegasus among them. The two airports are 96.5 km apart by road, about 76 minutes off-peak, and a fixed-price transfer between them costs €95.

The Bosphorus is the deciding line. Every European-side district reached from SAW requires a bridge or the Eurasia Tunnel, and at peak the crossing is the slowest part of the journey. IST reaches the European side without touching the water, and SAW does the same for the Asian side. Sultanahmet is the one district where the two airports tie on price. A fixed-price transfer costs €64 from either airport, for 53 km and 63 minutes from IST or 50 km and 70 minutes from SAW. The route from SAW is shorter yet slower, because it crosses the Bosphorus and then works its way through the historic peninsula. If you land in a weekday peak, IST is the safer choice for Sultanahmet, since its route stays on the European side the whole way.

Fatih, Laleli and Aksaray sit a little further west, and here SAW is cheaper on paper: €52 for 39 km and 55 minutes, against €59 for 45 km and 47 minutes from IST. Taksim is close to a tie. From IST the transfer is 44 km, 56 minutes and €58; from SAW it is 41 km, 66 minutes and €55. SAW saves €3 and costs 10 minutes off-peak, and the gap widens at rush hour because the route from SAW crosses the Bosphorus. Karaköy and Galata tip towards IST. The transfer from IST is 40 km, 49 minutes and €53, the shortest and cheapest way into Beyoğlu from either airport. From SAW the same neighbourhoods are 41.5 km, 61 minutes and €55. Public transport works for Taksim from both airports: the M11 metro from IST reaches Taksim with one change in 60 to 80 minutes for about €1 to €2, and Havabus from SAW takes 60 to 100 minutes. With suitcases, a door-to-door transfer saves the final walk from the station to the hotel.

The business and shopping districts north of Taksim are where IST wins by the widest margin on the European side. Beşiktaş is 43 km, 49 minutes and €56 from IST against 47.5 km, 56 minutes and €61 from SAW. Şişli and Nişantaşı are 41 km, 49 minutes and €54 from IST against 48 km, 60 minutes and €62 from SAW. In both cases IST is cheaper, faster and free of a Bosphorus crossing.

Levent and Maslak are the clearest case in the whole comparison. From IST they are 37 km and 42 minutes, the shortest transfer on the IST list, at €50. From SAW the same office towers are 58 km, 51 minutes and €64. A traveller with a meeting in Levent who books a SAW flight to save a few euros gives most of it back on the transfer and adds a bridge crossing at exactly the hour when it is slowest.

For the Asian side the answer is short: fly into Sabiha Gökçen. Kadıköy is 33 km, 50 minutes and €46 from SAW, against 53 km, 62 minutes and €64 from IST. Ataşehir is even closer to SAW: 34 km, 37 minutes and €46, against 57 km, 56 minutes and €64 from IST. The €18 difference per car is the largest gap in this guide, and the IST route also has to cross the Bosphorus to get there.

Public transport from SAW is workable for Kadıköy. Havabus runs to Kadıköy in 60 to 100 minutes depending on traffic, and the M4 metro heads towards Kadıköy from the airport. A metered taxi from SAW to Kadıköy comes to roughly ₺1,650, about €29, under the tariff in force since 20 July 2026, with tolls and waiting time on top.
