Which Turkish Airport Should You Fly Into? A Resort-by-Resort Guide

A cheaper flight into the wrong airport can cost you four hours and the price of the saving. Here is the nearest airport for every stretch of the Turkish coast, with real distances.

Turkey's coast is served by four holiday airports, and the cheapest flight is not always to the right one. The gap between a 50-kilometre transfer and a 250-kilometre one is the difference between being at the pool by lunchtime and arriving after dark. This is the nearest airport for each stretch of coast, with the distances we actually drive.

Dalaman (DLM): Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kalkan, Marmaris

Dalaman is the airport for the south-west, and it is unusually well placed: most of the resorts it serves are within an hour and a half. Göcek is 19 km (about 25 minutes), Fethiye 49 km (about 55 minutes), Ölüdeniz 62 km (about 1 hour 15), Marmaris 95 km (about 1 hour 30).

Further east the road climbs into the mountains: Kalkan is 121 km (about 1 hour 50) and Kaş 148 km (about 2 hours 15). Dalyan, Sarıgerme and Hisarönü all sit comfortably inside the same radius. If your holiday is anywhere between Marmaris and Kaş, Dalaman is almost certainly your airport.

Antalya (AYT): Belek, Side, Alanya, Kemer

Antalya serves the eastern Mediterranean and is the busiest of the four by a wide margin. Kemer sits to the west of the city, while Belek, Side, Manavgat and Alanya spread eastwards along a fast dual carriageway — which is why Alanya, at roughly 125 km, is a more comfortable drive than its distance suggests.

Antalya also reaches Kaş and Kalkan, but from the far side: around three hours to Kaş and longer to Kalkan, over the mountain road. For those two towns Dalaman is the natural choice, and Antalya only makes sense when the flights are dramatically better.

Bodrum (BJV) and İzmir (ADB): the Aegean

Milas–Bodrum Airport is not in Bodrum: the town is 36 km away, about 40 minutes, and the popular bays are further still — Yalıkavak and Turgutreis are both around 56 km, roughly an hour. Didim, at 89 km, is north of the airport rather than on the peninsula.

İzmir Adnan Menderes is the airport for Çeşme and Alaçatı, and the one most people overlook for the northern Aegean. It also serves Kuşadası and Selçuk, which makes it the sensible arrival point for anyone building a holiday around Ephesus rather than a beach.

The cheap-flight trap

The most expensive mistake on this coast is booking into the wrong airport to save on the fare. Dalaman and Antalya are 240 kilometres apart — a three-and-a-half-hour drive with no scheduled flight between them, so getting it wrong is not something you fix at the airport.

Before you book, work out the transfer as part of the ticket price. A fare that is fifty pounds cheaper into Antalya when your villa is in Kalkan will cost you more than that in the transfer, and several hours of your first day. The same applies in reverse for anyone heading to Side or Alanya on a Dalaman flight.

What else should tip the decision

Arrival time matters as much as distance. A midnight landing at Dalaman with a 25-minute run to Göcek is a non-event; the same landing with two hours to Kaş means arriving at three in the morning. If your flight lands late and your resort is far, consider the earlier flight even if it costs more.

Group size changes the maths too. Transfers are priced per vehicle rather than per seat, so a family of six pays once — which can make the further airport perfectly viable if the flights are much better. And if you are travelling between regions mid-holiday, remember that an open-jaw booking, into one airport and out of the other, is often cheaper than two returns.

Betrouwbaar en netjes

Fijne ervaring van begin tot eind. Onze vlucht landde laat in de avond, maar de chauffeur wachtte geduldig. De auto was schoon en de rit naar Göcek verliep vlot en veilig. Prettige communicatie vooraf. Zeker weer boeken.

Guter Service, kleine Wartezeit

Kesinlikle tavsiye ederim.
