Ölüdeniz Travel Guide: The Lagoon, Beaches and Activities

Ölüdeniz is one of Türkiye’s most recognisable stretches of Mediterranean coast, the turquoise lagoon you know from postcards is right here. With calm swimming beaches, a world-famous paragliding launch and a cluster of hidden coves nearby, it suits both families and thrill-seekers. This guide covers everything from the lagoon and beaches to the activities and how to get here from the airport.

The Blue Lagoon & Kumburnu Nature Park

Ölüdeniz’s signature turquoise lagoon lies inside the protected Kumburnu Nature Park (Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı). Separated from the open sea by a slender spit of sand, this cove is shielded from the wind and stays almost mirror-still. That is exactly where its name comes from: “ölü deniz” literally means the dead or still sea.

Because the water is shallow and warm, it is an especially safe place for families with children to swim. You can wade metres from the shore and still stand comfortably, and the water is so clear you can see straight to the bottom. Rent a sunbed and umbrella for a lazy day, or picnic in the shade of the pines lining the bay.

As a protected area, no motorised water-sports are permitted inside the lagoon, which is precisely why the water stays so clear and calm. Arriving early is your best bet for beating the crowds and catching the stillest views.

The Beaches: Belcekız & Kıdrak

Right beside the lagoon, Belcekız Beach is Ölüdeniz’s lively main beach. A strip of bars, restaurants and cafés, sunbed service and water-sports options keeps the atmosphere buzzing all day. It is also where the paragliders land, so watching the colourful canopies drift down from the sky becomes part of the beach experience.

For a quieter day, Kıdrak Beach, a few kilometres along, is far more peaceful and natural. Framed by pine trees, this cove is ideal for escaping the crowds and swimming in clear water.

At both beaches you can rent a sunbed, swim, and snorkel to spot fish along the rocky edges. Belcekız for buzz, Kıdrak for calm, the choice is yours depending on the mood of the day.

Paragliding from Babadağ

Ölüdeniz’s most unforgettable experience is without doubt a tandem paraglide from Babadağ (~1,960 m). Thanks to the mountain’s wind conditions and altitude, it is considered one of the world’s top launch sites, drawing thousands of visitors every year for the view alone.

The cable car (Babadağ Teleferik) to the summit is worth it in its own right, even if you never take off, the bird’s-eye view over the lagoon is spectacular. On a tandem flight you are harnessed to a licensed pilot, take a short running start and then soar directly above the turquoise lagoon; no experience is needed, as the pilot handles everything.

The morning hours, when the air is calmest and clearest, are the best time to fly. It can be cool at altitude, so a light jacket is a good idea.

Other Activities

Ölüdeniz is about far more than the beach and paragliding. The region’s most popular day trip is a boat cruise around the surrounding coves that stops at Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi), a dramatic cliff-walled gorge reachable easily only by sea, named for the butterfly species that live there.

For walkers, the legendary Lycian Way passes right through here. Following these ancient paths, you cross pine forests, hidden coves and breathtaking sea views.

Divers can join dive trips to explore the underwater world, while those after a gentler pace can take to a sea kayak. In short, it is just as easy to fill a single day here as a whole week.

Getting There from Dalaman Airport

Ölüdeniz is about 55 km / ~1 hour from Dalaman Airport (DLM). The route follows a scenic but winding mountain road through Fethiye, with lovely views over the sea and pine forests on the descent.

The most comfortable way to arrive is a fixed-price private transfer. Even if your flight is delayed your driver waits for you, handles the luggage and drops you right at your hotel door, no juggling connections on public transport.

Especially for families with children or late-arriving flights, a door-to-door private car is the most practical option, saving both time and fatigue.

Betrouwbaar en netjes

Fijne ervaring van begin tot eind. Onze vlucht landde laat in de avond, maar de chauffeur wachtte geduldig. De auto was schoon en de rit naar Göcek verliep vlot en veilig. Prettige communicatie vooraf. Zeker weer boeken.

Guter Service, kleine Wartezeit

Kesinlikle tavsiye ederim.
