Ercan Airport to Kyrenia: Distance, Taxi Prices, Airport Bus and Fixed-Price Transfer 2026

Ercan Airport to Kyrenia town centre (the old harbour and castle area) is 45 km by road and takes about 46 minutes in a private car, so a little under an hour door to door. The times are 2026 measurements and vary with traffic: evening congestion on the Nicosia ring road, summer weekends and slow lorries on the mountain pass can each add a few minutes. At night and early in the morning the road is empty and under 40 minutes is realistic. The same journey on the Kıbhas bus takes 60-75 minutes once stops and waiting are counted.

The drive from Ercan to Kyrenia has three parts. First you leave the new terminal on its link road heading west towards Nicosia (Lefkoşa); drivers join the Nicosia ring road and pick up the main Kyrenia road without entering the city. The second part is the Nicosia-Kyrenia highway, a mostly dual-carriageway mountain road that crosses the Five Finger (Beşparmak) range through the Kyrenia pass and is the scenic highlight of the trip. The third part is the descent into Kyrenia: straight into town for central hotels, or onto the coast road east or west for the resort strips.

The first stretch of roughly 15 km between Ercan and Nicosia is flat and quick, and the airport exit was rebuilt together with the new terminal that opened in 2023. On the pass, lorries and summer traffic slow things down, and in winter there is occasional fog. If you are driving yourself, follow the ring-road signs rather than cutting through Nicosia; it is both shorter and far less stressful.

Public transport from Ercan Airport to Kyrenia means the Kıbhas airport buses. They do not run to a fixed timetable but around flight arrivals and departures; you find them outside the terminal, with separate services for Nicosia and Kyrenia. The fare is paid in Turkish lira, usually on board. Check Kıbhas's own channels for the current tariff and that day's times, because both change during the year and any figure printed here would date quickly.

Three things are worth knowing. First, the bus drops you at the central stop in Kyrenia, not at your hotel; for Alsancak, Lapta or Çatalköy you continue by taxi or local minibus. Second, the bus may wait until it fills or until the passengers from a flight have gathered, and on late-night arrivals that wait can be long. Third, on the way back you need to plan the bus to reach the airport at least two hours before your flight. For a solo traveller with light luggage staying in the centre it is by far the cheapest option; for families and anyone in a coastal resort the sums soon favour a taxi or a transfer.

Airport taxis wait at the terminal exit at Ercan and reach Kyrenia in about 45 minutes. Taxis in North Cyprus do not run on a meter the way Istanbul cabs do; each rank works to its own tariff, the fare is quoted in Turkish lira and a higher night rate may apply. If you do take a taxi, do three things: name your hotel and agree the fare in Turkish lira before setting off, ask whether you can pay by card, and if paying in sterling or euros agree the exchange rate first. The biggest drawback of the tariff system is uncertainty: the same journey can cost two different amounts on the same day, and the negotiation is repeated for the trip back.

North Cyprus drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars, which suits British visitors, but the first 45 km still involve a mountain pass, often at night after a long flight. Hire cars carry red number plates, so local drivers give you a little more patience, and the island's many roundabouts are where most mistakes happen. There are plenty of hire desks at the airport and in Kyrenia; for summer you should book the car ahead.

Two more notes. Cars hired in the north generally cannot be taken into the Republic of Cyprus, so read your contract. Insurance cover and deposit rules vary between companies. Parking in Kyrenia centre is tight, while most coastal resorts have their own car parks. Think of Kyrenia as three separate hotel areas, because the journey from the airport and the rhythm of the holiday differ in each. The centre and harbour area holds Kyrenia Castle, the old harbour, the Kordonboyu seafront and the town hotels; restaurants and nightlife are within walking distance, and casino hotels such as Lord's Palace sit on the edge of the centre. At 45 km it is the shortest transfer.

The west coast begins at Karaoğlanoğlu and runs through Alsancak and Lapta to Karşıyaka. The big casino resorts Merit Royal, Merit Park and Merit Crystal Cove are in Alsancak, while Lapta and Karşıyaka are quieter, villa and apartment territory. At 56 km the transfer takes close to an hour. The east coast is Çatalköy and Esentepe: resorts such as Cratos Premium, Elexus, Acapulco and Chamada Prestige, plus Esentepe's golf and villa country. Because east-coast hotels are reached along the coast road straight after the pass without entering Kyrenia, they are the closest to the airport at 43 km. Every flight into Ercan comes via Turkey, and a good share of the services from Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen, Ankara, İzmir and Antalya land late at night or very early in the morning; UK passengers usually connect through Istanbul or arrive on a touchdown flight. The nearest true holiday base is Kyrenia at 45 km, and for an early return flight a 6 am transfer from Kyrenia is more practical for most travellers than a night near the airport.

The nearest airport to Kyrenia is Ercan at 45 km; Larnaca Airport in the Republic of Cyprus is about 80 km away via Nicosia and takes 1.5-2 hours including the crossing. Travellers from the UK often land at Larnaca because of the direct flights and continue to Kyrenia by road. Vehicles cross at the Metehan (Ayios Dometios) checkpoint on the west side of Nicosia; the Ledra Palace and Ledra Street crossings are for pedestrians. There are passport checks on both sides, and because the entry rules in 2026 depend on your nationality, check the current position before you travel.

Most cars hired in the south are not insured for the north; separate third-party cover is sold at the crossing, and some hire companies do not allow the crossing at all. Southern taxis generally do not cross either, so you change vehicles at the line.
