How to Get from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the City: Metro M11, Havaist Bus, Taxi and Private Transfer

Four ways from Istanbul Airport to Taksim and Sultanahmet: metro M11, Havaist bus, taxi and private transfer — with a full price and duration comparison table.

Istanbul Airport (IST) sits well outside the centre: about 40 km from Taksim and 45 km from Sultanahmet. You have four realistic options: the M11 metro (~€1–2, with a change), the Havaist airport bus (~€4–6), a metered taxi (~€35–50) and a fixed-price private transfer (from ~€40). Which one suits you depends on your luggage, your landing time and the size of your group — the table and district-by-district guide below make the choice easy.

Price and duration comparison table (2026, approx.)

Here is how the four options compare for Taksim and Sultanahmet:

| Option | Price (approx.) | Time to Taksim | Time to Sultanahmet | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Metro M11 | ~€1–2 (Istanbulkart) | 60–75 min (M11+M2) | 75–90 min (M11+M2/T1 change) | Cheapest; awkward with luggage | | Havaist bus | ~€4–6 | 80–100 min | 90–110 min (alight at Beyazıt) | Traffic-dependent | | Taxi | ~€35–50 | 45–75 min | 50–80 min | Meter, paid in lira | | Private transfer | from ~€40 (per vehicle) | 45–75 min | 50–80 min | Fixed price, meet-and-greet included |

Metro and bus prices are per person, while taxi and private transfer are per vehicle — so for groups of 2–3 the per-head cost of a private transfer often rivals the Havaist bus.

Metro M11: cheapest, but you will change lines

The M11 line links the airport with Gayrettepe and Halkalı; trains run roughly every 10–15 minutes during the day and you pay with an Istanbulkart (~€1–2). For Taksim, change at Gayrettepe onto the M2 line — the whole journey takes 60–75 minutes.

For Sultanahmet the route is longer: take M11 + M2 to Vezneciler and walk about 10 minutes, or change to the T1 tram; budget 75–90 minutes in total. The metro station is within walking distance of the terminal, but the travelators and line changes are tiring with large suitcases. Late at night services thin out, so check the last-train time before relying on it.

The Havaist bus and taxis

Havaist buses leave from the lower level of the terminal; the Taksim line takes about 80–100 minutes and a ticket costs ~€4–6 (Istanbulkart or bank card). For Sultanahmet the closest stop is Beyazıt, from where a tram ride or a 10–15 minute walk gets you to the old town. In heavy traffic journey times stretch considerably.

Taxis run on the meter and are paid in Turkish lira: expect roughly €35–45 to Taksim and €35–50 to Sultanahmet (approximate 2026 exchange rates). The taxi queue at arrivals can be long at peak times, and the final fare depends on route and traffic — plan your budget at the upper end of the range.

Heading to Sultanahmet or to Taksim?

Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı) lies on the historic peninsula and has no direct metro link; with luggage the most comfortable solution is a car that takes you to the door. See the fixed-price route page: /en/transfers/istanbul-sultanahmet-transfer. For hotels in the narrow old-town lanes, your driver drops you at the closest accessible point.

Taksim (İstiklal Avenue, the Cihangir hotel district) is directly on the metro, so M11+M2 is a sensible choice if you travel light. For late-night landings or two-plus suitcases, though, a fixed-price transfer is the least stressful option: /en/transfers/istanbul-taksim-transfer. On both routes your GET4S driver tracks the flight live and waits free of charge if you are delayed.

Betrouwbaar en netjes

Fijne ervaring van begin tot eind. Onze vlucht landde laat in de avond, maar de chauffeur wachtte geduldig. De auto was schoon en de rit naar Göcek verliep vlot en veilig. Prettige communicatie vooraf. Zeker weer boeken.

Guter Service, kleine Wartezeit

Kesinlikle tavsiye ederim.
