Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Istanbul City Centre: Havabus, Metro, Taxi or Private Transfer by District (2026)

Sabiha Gökçen is Istanbul's second airport, 96.5 km from Istanbul Airport (IST) on the opposite corner of the city. It lies south-east of the centre on the Asian side, close to the Marmara coast, which makes it the near airport for Kadıköy, Ataşehir, Üsküdar and the rest of Anatolian Istanbul, and the far airport for everything in Europe. Road distances from the terminal: Kadıköy 33 km, Ataşehir 34 km, Fatih and Laleli 39 km, Taksim 41 km, Karaköy and Galata 41.5 km, Beşiktaş 47.5 km, Şişli and Nişantaşı 48 km, Sultanahmet 50 km.

The kilometres are not the story; the water is. Every destination on the European side, which is where Sultanahmet, Taksim, Galata, Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı all are, means crossing the Bosphorus by bridge, by the Eurasia Tunnel or by Marmaray under the sea. Off-peak the crossing costs a few minutes; at the weekday peaks between 07:30 and 10:00 and between 17:00 and 20:30 it is where 20 to 40 extra minutes are lost. Kadıköy and Ataşehir never cross the water, which is why they are the cheapest and most predictable arrivals from SAW.

Per person against per vehicle is the comparison that matters. A couple with a suitcase each pays €8-10 on Havabus and €55 in a private car to Taksim; a family of four pays €16-20 on the bus and the same €55 in the car, but rides from the terminal to the hotel door with the luggage in the back. Sultanahmet is the furthest of the main districts from SAW at 50 km, about 70 minutes off-peak, and there is no Havabus line to the old city. The public transport route is the M4 metro from the airport to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci, then one stop on the T1 tram or a 15-minute walk up to Sultanahmet: about 90 to 110 minutes and €1-2.5 per person, with escalators and two changes for the luggage.

A taxi takes the Eurasia Tunnel, which surfaces close to the historic peninsula. The meter for 50 km comes to roughly ₺2,470, about €44, and the tunnel toll is added on top; at the evening peak expect the total to pass €50 with metered waiting. Taksim is the district Havabus was built for. The shuttle leaves from outside arrivals roughly every 30 minutes through the day, costs the lira equivalent of about €4-5 paid on board, and reaches its Taksim stop in 85 to 100 minutes in normal traffic, longer in the evening rush on the bridge. From the stop it is a walk or a short taxi to hotels in Cihangir, Galata or along İstiklal, which is fine with a cabin bag and hard work with two suitcases on the hills.

By rail the route is M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray to Yenikapı and M2 north to Taksim, or Marmaray to Sirkeci and the T1 tram to Karaköy and Kabataş for Galata and the waterfront: 100 to 120 minutes and €1-2.5. If your hotel is in Kadıköy, Moda or Ataşehir, Sabiha Gökçen is the right airport and every option is quick. The M4 metro runs directly from the airport to Kadıköy in about 45 minutes for €1-2, with no change, and Havabus also serves Kadıköy in 60 to 100 minutes depending on traffic. For Ataşehir, leave the M4 at Kozyatağı or Yenisahra and take a short taxi, or simply take a car from the airport: 34 km and about 37 minutes.

A metered taxi comes to roughly ₺1,650 (€29) for Kadıköy and ₺1,700 (€30) for Ataşehir, with no bridge toll because the route never crosses the water; this is the one pair of destinations where the taxi and the fixed price are close even for a family. Beşiktaş and Şişli are the European districts furthest from SAW by road, 47.5 and 48 km, because the route crosses the bridge and then works north along the Bosphorus shore or up through Mecidiyeköy. Public transport is a two- or three-change affair. For Beşiktaş the pleasant route is M4 to Kadıköy and a ferry across to Beşiktaş, a 20 to 30 minute crossing with daytime sailings; the rail alternative is Marmaray to Sirkeci, T1 to Kabataş and a walk. Two road crossings matter from SAW. The 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the first Bosphorus bridge, is the natural route to Beşiktaş, Taksim and Şişli; the Eurasia Tunnel under the strait is the direct route to Sultanahmet, Fatih and the old city, and the pricier crossing. Marmaray is the rail crossing under the sea and is immune to road traffic, which is why the metro's time hardly changes at rush hour while every road option does. The traffic windows are the same every weekday: 07:30 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:30. A 66-minute run to Taksim becomes 90 to 105 in those hours and the taxi meter keeps counting while stationary. Outside them, and at weekends, the off-peak times in this guide are realistic. Night arrivals are simpler than they look: Istanbul taxis have no night surcharge, the rank at SAW works around the clock, and a pre-booked transfer costs the same at 03:00 as at 15:00. What disappears at night is public transport: the metro is closed between roughly 01:00 and 05:00 and Havabus runs only a thin overnight schedule, so a landing in that window means a car of some kind.

The pattern is consistent. On the Asian side the metro is so direct that only luggage or a night landing justifies a car. On the European side the public routes all need two or three changes, so a couple with suitcases usually finds the €55 to €64 fixed price worth it, and a family of four almost always does, since two taxis or four bus fares plus the last-mile taxi land in the same range without the door-to-door service.
